Wednesday I offered to help Ali with his homework. He pulled out a worksheet with some fill-in-the-blank questions, apparently from his Social Studies class.
Question 1: Palestinians in the ____________ demanded self-rule after (some date, I don't remember)
Expected answer: a) the occupied terroritories.
I felt a little bit sick. Ali speaks more English than anyone else in his family, but his English is basic at best. Go to school, wash clothes, how much money, where is it - that's what he's equipped to express and understand in English at this point.
I don't really know what to say. I have been so incredibly fortunate all my life.
